An uncertain etymological origin is what seems to have the term wave. However, a large majority of experts in the field argue that it comes from French, from the word "houle" which means "undulations of the sea." However, this in turn is not known with certainty if it emanates from the Greek "holoos", which is synonymous with "disastrous", or from the Arabic "haul", which can be translated as "agitation of the sea".

It is known as wave to wave that is created on the aquatic surface , usually in the ocean . The waves occur as a result of wind , which exerts a force on the liquid. This phenomenon takes place in any water mirror, be it a lagoon, a river or another, although it is more noticeable in the sea since the space available for the wave to form is wider.
Unlike what one might think, waves do not always form a few meters from the coast. On many occasions, the waves begin to develop several kilometers away from the Beach until they break in the sand.
The water depth, the area subject to the wind and the speed Of this are some of the factors that affect the greater or lesser size of each wave. When the waves are large, they can be used for the practice of surfing , a very popular water sport.
The fans of this sport are trying to enjoy the sea and their favorite passion getting "hunt" to the biggest wave. In this sense, the most risky and daring surfers bet on certain places in the world where it is easier for them to meet that goal, thanks to the height of the sea waves:
• I will be born. To the north of the Portuguese city of Lisbon is this small population of fishermen that has come to have waves up to 30 meters high.
• Maui Island. In Hawaii it is where this other territory is located, which has also reached that above mentioned height.
• Pipeline. One of the favorite enclaves for surf lovers is this, also located in Hawaii. In this case, we can say that waves of up to 50 meters were found in the 1960s.
• Mavericks. This Californian beach is, likewise, one of the most visited by this water sport. And it is usual that the waves reach a minimum of 2 meters and a maximum of 15 meters.
It is important to note, however, that there are waves whose formation mechanism is different. When a tsunami by an earthquake that occurs at the bottom of the ocean, huge waves usually occur that have nothing to do with the action of the wind.
The idea of wave, on the other hand, can be referred to a phenomenon of weather that modifies the conditions of a place (“The heat wave does not stop in the city”), to simultaneous movement of a lot of people (“A wave of people invaded the squares”) Yet the trend that is imposed (“The country will host a wave of pop music concerts”).
